Syrah

Red grape from the northern Rhône valley, responsible for the réputation of the Hermitage, Cornas et Côte-Rôtie wines.

Forming the basis of quality wines, the syrah produces a moisture, rich on tannins. Its aroma of violets pictures not only the productions of the Rhône valley, but also those of the Provence and the Languedoc, where it is largely been planted over the last years. The variety is believed to originate from the Rhône valley. Archeaological excavations prove its presence on the hills along the river for more than two thousand years. Other presumptions, now abandoned, have been launched in regard to its origin : it's name should originate from the Iranian town of Chiraz ; the syrah was imported by the Romans. It has also been adopted by the "New World". In Australia, it is the base of the famous wine of Penfolds. Over there it is called Shiraz.
