Grenache

Red grape variety of Spanish origin
Rather sweet, the Grenache grape is short of acidity and tannines. Its tender skin is subject to perish easily. The Grenache needs a lot of sun in order to ripen. For that reason, it is cultivated in the south of the Rhône-valley and all along the coastal region of the Mediterranean, especially in Spain, where it is named Garnacha Tinta, and enters into the assemblage with the Tempranillo for the creation of the Rioja. It is rarely vinified single, but it has proven that the Grenache lifts itself to the heights of the greatest noble varieties on dry lime-sandy areas, (especially in the Chateauneuf du Pape), when the yields are modest. Further, the grape ist the first component of the "natural sweet wines" as the Rasteau, the Banyuls and the Maury. The white variety of the Grenache is mostly cultivated in the West Mediterranean and on the other side of the Pyrénées, in Spain. This type with very sweet grapes and very low acidity takes part in the making of the French "natural sweet wines" and especially the Rioja; it contributes with lipids and heavy aromas.
