Carignan

Red grape variety of Spanish origin, mainly culitvated in the Languedoc-Rousillion
The Carignan has found its most liked area. From the XII. century, it has conquered the Languedoc-Roussillion. This rather unpopular grape is a victime of its gernerous yields, which it offers on the plains. In these cases, its harshness dominates over its fruity taste and the wine looses all of its qualities. In revenge, the old Carignan in the foothills is the source of very coloured, structured, tannic and fruity wines, perfectly apt for long keeping. Assembled on Grenache Noir, it is the basis of the Côtes du Roussillion and the Fitou.
